The search for a perfect roulette strategy goes back as far as the game itself. One of the oldest forms of casino entertainment, roulette has fascinated and frustrated gamblers for centuries. Even after all this time, the question remains – is there a roulette system that will guarantee that you win more than you lose? The short answer to this is, unfortunately, there is not. The house advantage is a mathematical certainty, built into the game. Over time, the casino will come out on top.

But if the casino always wins in the long run, is there any good reason to employ a roulette betting strategy? The answer to this question is yes, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the house edge covers long periods of time and doesn’t account for large wins in the short term. Many people have certainly won a huge amount on the roulette wheel. The second reason is that employing a roulette strategy provides some structure and purpose to a game that may otherwise feel rather haphazard. Today we will look at a summary of some of the most famous strategies used in this game of chance, as well as providing some roulette tips to improve your game.
In this article we will give a brief overview of a number of roulette strategies, including our judgement of how effective each one is. The strategies covered on this page are:
First, a quick review of the game itself.
In reputable roulette games, the mechanical wheel is regularly inspected to make sure that it is fair and has not been tampered with. At online roulette sites, the same thing applies but this time to the random number generator (RNG) that controls the games. The RNG is a complex algorithm that mimics the conditions of pure chance for all virtual games. Some of the most prestigious casino software studios in the business have produced various versions of the classic game, including
These are all RNG games, with the exception of Evolution Gaming which provides a live dealer game for online casinos. Now that we have the basics of the game, let’s turn our attention to the different roulette strategy guidelines. All these apply equally to online, live dealer, and land-based casino games.
Let’s take a closer look at all the main strategies and systems that you can use to win when you play roulette
It may be the most well known, but is Martingale the best roulette strategy? In our professional opinion, not only is it not the best, it might actually be one of the very worst. Beginners may appreciate its simplicity, but the fact is that Martingale is incredibly risky and for very little reward.
The Martingale System for roulette is what’s known as a progressive betting strategy, meaning that you increase subsequent bets based on the outcome of the last bet. In the case of Martingale, you bet double your previous wager after a lost bet. The thinking behind this is that at some point you will win and recoup all the previous losses.
However, doubling your bets will take you from £10 to £640 with a run of just seven losses. If that loses, you may already have hit the table limit and be seriously out of pocket. A run like that may sound unusual, but it’s actually all too likely. And at the end of it, all you get is a £10 profit if you do win.
Also known as the Reverse or Inverse Martingale, the Paroli sytem is another progressive roulette strategy that holds slightly less risk than the traditional Martingale. In this roulette system, players double their bets after a win. In order to keep betting in check, players should start the sequence from the beginning after three consecutive wins.
Both Paroli and Martingale are steep progressive strategies, and they only really work when making outside bets such as red/black. These pay out at 1:1 and have a probability of 48.60% in European roulette and 47.4% in American.Beginners may favour Paroli because it is still very easy to understand but comes with fewer risks. However, we do not really recommend either of these strategies.
The Labouchere roulette strategy is also progressive, but it has a flatter progression than those we have seen so far. It still only works for outside bets, but it’s a little more involved and the outcomes are better on the whole. It may look complicated at first, but it’s not difficult to get the hang of. First, set a target for how much you would like to win – say £100. Divide that number into six or seven smaller bets of a similar value, for example:
Remember this is just an example, the way you divide the total is up to you. Your first bet will be the sum of the numbers at each end, in this case 10 + 10 = £20. If that first wager wins, eliminate the numbers that you used so that your sequence now looks like this:
So, your next bet would be 10 + 20 = £30. However, if the first bet loses, you must add that bet to the end of the sequence, like so:
Continue like this until you have either won your desired amount overall, or until you have used up your bankroll.
We believe that the original Labouchere system is just fine as it is, but in case you want to switch things up there is also an inverse version. In this case, instead of increasing the bets when you lose, do it when you win. So, after a winning bet, add it to the end of the sequence, and after a losing bet eliminate the numbers that you used. We like this one because it usually results in small losses, which is a great way to keep your bankroll going for longer.
Some players swear that Andrucci is the most successful roulette strategy, although we are more than a little skeptical. This roulette system requires some research, and may not be practically possible at an online casino. The player must observe thirty spins of the wheel and note where the ball lands each time. After identifying a number that the ball lands on more than any other, the player then bets on that number alone until they get a win, up to twenty five spins. Of course we don’t need to tell you that the laws of probability do not support this system in the slightest, and in theory it could only work if the wheel were rigged in some way.
The D’Alembert System takes the simplicity of Martingale and makes it less risky with a flatter progression. This is another roulette strategy for even-money bets. Start with a fixed bankroll – let’s stick with £100. Divide this bankroll into units that are no more than 1% of the total, and preferably more like 0.5% – so, £1 or 50 pence. Start betting with a single unit, adding one after a loss and subtracting one after a win. D’Alembert is incredibly low risk, but it is not the roulette strategy to win big money. Losses and gains will both be very modest, but it’s simple and fun.
Of course, there is a reverse version of D’Alembert as well. Start the same way, then add one unit after a win and subtract one after a loss.
Fibonacci is another even-money betting system, based on the Fibonacci number progression. In case you don’t know, this sequence is the one where the next number is the sum of the previous two numbers. Here is the start of the sequence, although of course it can go on forever:
Move along the sequence making the next bet after each loss. After a win, move back two steps and continue. In this way, you can still make a profit even if you have more losses than wins. Of course that is far from guaranteed, and the house edge remains the same as always.
The first of the truly non-progressive strategies – apart from the strange and unrecommended Andrucci – is the 3 2 System, allowing for inside bets as well as outside bets. Take five units and place two on an outside bet (e.g. odd/even) and three on an inside bet (e.g. a column). You can reverse the 3/2 split if you like. The idea is to cover as much of the wheel as possible to minimise losses. While it may achieve this, 3 2 is not a profitable roulette strategy.
This last system is a gentler progressive roulette betting strategy, again to be used on even-money wagers. Simply follow the pattern 1-3-2-6, going back to the start after each loss. If you were using units of £2, then the bet progression would be £2 – £6 – £4 – £12. If the four bets all win, return to the start and repeat. This one is great for smaller table limits and those with a modest bankroll.
When it comes to roulette tactics online, there is not a single strategy that can overcome the house edge in the long run. That is just simple mathematics, not even the most sophisticated roulette strategy can help you with that. However, employing a lower-risk strategy definitely has some advantages. It gives you something to focus on, and helps to focus your attention and manage your bankroll effectively. We would never recommend Martingale, but something like the 1 3 2 6 System could make for a more enjoyable way to play.
